National Bike Month is Here!

May is National Bike Month. It’s sponsored by the League of American Bicyclists and is celebrated from sea to shining sea. Established in 1956, National Bike Month was established to encourage more people to give biking a try, showcasing the benefits of cycling both health and environmental. For more details check out The League of American Bicyclists website.

Not only can this be your excuse to get outside, but it’s a chance to get on a bicycle and see the world from a whole new perspective… or maybe just explore your community. May 15th to the 19th is National Bike Week. Even if you partake in nothing else, May 19th is National Bike to Work Day, giving you a chance to commute to work on your bicycle.

Many communities across the country are putting together different events and celebrations. Be sure to check out your local bicycle shops or city transportation websites to see if there are events going on near you. Being located in Morrisville, NC we are surrounded by some awesome cities including Raleigh, Cary, Durham, Chapel Hill and Carrboro.

Right next door to us the town of Cary is hosting a variety of opportunities for people to grab their bikes and ride around town. Check out their list of events here. In our backyard a nonprofit organization, Oaks and Spokes, is holding their yearly festival this month. They have events running from May 5th through May 14th in downtown Raleigh all centered around biking. For more information check our their Festival website. We are excited to take part in some of their events including their kickoff event, the Capital City Ride which is a short ride through Raleigh on Friday May 5th. We will also be taking part in the event on Sunday May 7th, 7 Murals + 7 Stories which includes a slow afternoon ride between seven of Raleigh’s amazing murals followed by a monthly storytelling event.

On the other side of our backyard are events being held in Durham, NC. They have teamed up with bicycle shops, breweries and more to bring the community some great events. We cannot wait to join other cyclists at the Seven Stars Cycles CycloFemme Ride on Sunday May 14th that benefits World Bicycle Relief’s project to provide bikes for girls in Kenya. For a full list of events check out the Bike Durham website. Right next door is Chapel Hill and Carrboro which are holding their own set of events including "Who’s Serious about the Choice to Bike?” on Wednesday, May 13. Check out the Town of Chapel Hill News Release website for a list of their events.

We cannot wait to attend some of these awesome rides. Be sure to check back to our blog next week share what we did and how it went.
